A 1979 graduate of Rochester High School , Coach attended Bethel College on an athletic scholarship. He played basketball for the now-retired Valparaiso University Coach Homer Drew.

In 1987 Coach Smith accepted the head basketball coaching position at Manchester High School and his team won the IHSAA Sectional at Columbia City  in his first season. In four years his teams compiled a 66-26 record, with his final Squires team finishing the regular season 20-0.

Among Coach Smith’s coaching honors was being selected Indiana Basketball Coaches Association “Coach of the Year” in 1991. His teams have won fifteen tournament titles along with five conference championships.. Twice he has been selected as a coach in the McDonald’s All-American Game!

Three times Coach has served on the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors. Coach Smith has directed the IBCA-IHSAA Underclassmen Showcases at Ben Davis HS since it was started in 2002. He has coached at several schools, including Penn, Noblesville, and Guerin Catholic. Led Guerin Catholic to the 3A State Championships in 2012 and 2015.

Coached by HOF coach Phil Buck…4-year letterman for the Hornets. Scoring Avg. Soph-18.7, Jr. 24.5, and Sr. 31.0 ppg. Scored 40 as sophomore vs Frankfort in Sectional game. Scored 42 in double overtime win over Lebanon and Rick Mount and HOF Coach Jim Rosenstihl. (Mount was only a freshman, but scored 26 in the game) Rossville win over Lafayette Jeff, scored 31 vs. Hall of Fame Coach Marion Crawley (The Broncos avenged that regular season loss in the Regional Finals) …held the Rossville Career Scoring Record for 25 years (1641 points)…scored 40+ points 8 times in career…state’s leading scorer as a senior… Grades 10-11-12, All-Conference, All-Sectional, All-County & All-State as senior…Tough choice as a senior…offered full scholarship by both Purdue and Butler. Choice was even tougher because Coach Bob King (Purdue Ast. Coach, HOF Member, IBCA Exec. Director) recruited Gene for Purdue…chose Butler to have that great Fieldhouse as a home court! Played college ball for HOF coach Tony Hinkle. Butler team wins included Coach Hinkle’s 500th, win over #3 ranked Michigan and Cazzie Russell, highly ranked USC, Oklahoma…chosen for the Indiana College all-Star team in 1967 versus Coach Adolph Rupp, Kentucky (Louie Dampier). Coached at Clinton Central, Lafayette Harrison, Rensselaer Central. Member of the 1988 Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary team…publisher of Indiana High School Basketball Record Book (since 1983)… job placement director for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) since 1984…operates State Statistical Office (IBCA), editor of All-State Underclass Books for girls and boys, IBCA website coordinator…received the Virgil Sweet Distinguished Service Award from the IBCA in 2006.

Gene married Carolyn “Carrie” (Blue) in 1965 and they have two grown children. Fraternity brothers Jeff and Mike Blue (From Bainbridge and Butler…great guys and great players) introduced Gene to Carrie, their cousin. Jeff Blue was Inducted into the HOF in 1999.
